What conditions can i help with?
Here are some of the conditions I can help with:
-
Back & Neck pain - acute and long-term
-
Sciatica
-
Shoulder pain
-
Sports injuries: acute & recurring
-
Fibromyalgia
-
Tension headaches
-
Tendinopathy/tendonitis
-
Repetitive strain injuries
-
Post-operative pain
-
Tension myositis/myoneural syndrome (TMS), sometimes known as mind/body disorders (MBD)
-
Persistent pain problems that have been extensively investigated but remain unexplained by scans
Causes of Pain
Persistent pain also known as chronic pain affects up to 50% of the population and is a major cause of disability. Research shows that whilst the number of interventions to target painful problems increases, we are not seeing consistent improvements in people's pain levels or quality of life.
Investigations identifying structural faults are useful, particularly in acute injuries to identify or exclude dangerous conditions or where there are surgical targets for example hip & knee osteoarthritis. However, when pain persists for months or years investigations can be frustratingly unhelpful and when treatments to target those findings don't help, we worry about further damage and what we should and shouldn't do in order to help ourselves.
Our emerging understanding of the science of pain tells us that acute injuries such as pulled muscles or spasms will cause pain but should be treated differently to pain problems that become chronic because of the way we can develop adaptive changes in the central nervous system and brain.
Adaptive changes can be influenced by many factors including how much sleep we are getting, our emotions and stress levels, how much exercise we are getting and how we think about the pain. We often don't explore these factors, which can be a reason why long-term pain problems develop.
My approach is to complete a comprehensive assessment of your acute or chronic problem, to understand about you as an individual and how your problem impacts on you. Through this I can then advise you appropriately about your diagnosis and tailor your rehabilitation accordingly to get you to where you want to be.
